Our High School teams keep giving us reasons to brag, and this week it's Sterling Heights Stevenson senior Olivia Buford taking the spotlight as Swimmer of the Meet at the Macomb County Championships. She didn't just win — she rewrote the record book, setting meet and Macomb L'Anse Creuse North pool records in both the 50-yard freestyle (23.95 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (58.75), the fly won by more than five seconds. Those aren't just local numbers either. That 50 freestyle time ranks fifth on the state's top times list this season, with the butterfly sitting 17th. This is a two-time MHSAA Finals racer who took 10th in the 50 a year ago in Lower Peninsula Division 1, and she's qualified again this fall in both events. And here's the kicker: she's about a second off a Finals cut time in the 100 backstroke, all while chasing a pre-medical degree with hopes of becoming a doctor. Smart and fast — a tough combination to beat.
Feel free to follow the link below to keep tabs on Olivia Buford and the rest of our swimmers as they chase Finals cuts this fall.
