This one had been coming all season, and our Bloomfield Hills Marian squad finally got off the mat against the team that had beaten them twice already. Marian (28-3) took down Farmington Hills Mercy in four sets — 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17 — to clinch the Catholic High School League Tournament title and take over the No. 1 ranking in Division 1. Mercy (20-4) slides to No. 2. Elsewhere our undefeated keep rolling. Parma Western ran the table through Hanover-Horton's Karen Abbott Invitational, a 6-0 weekend that pushed the Division 2 No. 3 squad to a spotless 32-0. And up north, Roscommon's host Bucks (29-6-5) handled Traverse City St. Francis 25-20, 25-15, avenging last year's loss to the Gladiators. The big one looms Saturday: the Beast of the East, a 32-team field with 18 ranked or honorable-mention clubs and both Marian and Grand Rapids Christian taking the court. District play begins in three weeks, so these résumés matter now.
