The MHSAA's eighth Multi-Sport Participation Survey is in, and our high school kids are still doing it the old-fashioned way — playing more than one game. Just more than 45 percent of athletes at member high schools suited up for two or more sports in 2025-26, with 73.8 percent of member schools responding. That number sits almost identical to 2024-25, and the smaller schools keep leading the charge: Class D checked in at a high of 64.2 percent, up 6.1 percent since 2017-18. The individual marks are where it really shines. Detroit Community reported all 72 of its athletes played multiple sports, and Watersmeet did the same with all 27 of theirs. Lake Leelanau St. Mary topped Class D at 95.5 percent, Detroit Denby led Class B at 83.6 percent, and Harper Creek paced Class A at 73.2 percent. A few programs have made this a habit — Battle Creek Harper Creek and Grand Rapids Northview have cracked the top 10 percent of their Classes seven of the eight survey years. That's a culture, not a coincidence, and it's the kind of thing that builds better all-around athletes across our state.
