DeBrincat Locks In: Red Wings Sign Sniper to Seven-Year, $13M Extension!

Big news out of Hockeytown this week as our Red Wings handed Alex DeBrincat a seven-year extension worth $13 million annually, the deal announced Wednesday and the maximum term allowed under the new collective bargaining agreement that kicked in last month. Had the ink dried before that CBA, the 28-year-old could have gone eight — but seven is the ceiling now, and interim GM Shawn Horcoff, given the authority by ownership to execute deals, got it done. The man has earned it. In his 10th season, DeBrincat sits on 296 goals and 600 points, has played a full 82 games each of the past five years, and leads this club with eight points — including two goals and an assist in Tuesday's 5-4 home loss to the Devils in the NHL's Frozen Frenzy opener. This commitment lands amid real noise: Detroit sits last in the Atlantic at 1-3-2, Dylan Larkin has a pending trade request, and Simon Edvinsson remains an unsigned restricted free agent away from the team. Securing our top scorer is the steadying move this group needed.
