If you wanted a first impression, we got one Monday night at Little Caesars Arena. John Collins, number 20, played just 17 minutes in his first preseason game for us against the Phoenix Suns — and in those 17 minutes he showed Detroit exactly who he is on both ends of the floor. The box score is tidy: 5-of-7 for 10 points, most of it thrown down on dunks, including a reverse slam after Ausar Thompson drove into the lane and set him up. He took one 3-pointer and missed it, and he grabbed three offensive boards, right in line with the 2.1 he's averaged for his career. The man plays hard. But the moment fans will remember came in a dust up with Dillon Brooks, number 3, when Collins put a hand to Brooks' throat and earned his first technical of the season. Welcome to Detroit. He shot 55 percent last season while Tobias Harris managed just 47 — the upgrade is right there in the numbers.
