The word out of Detroit is one Red Wings fans have been waiting to hear: Moritz Seider has reached the ranks of the NHL's elite defensemen. Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News lays it out, and for those of us who've watched Seider grow into the backbone of this blue line, it's no surprise at all. This lands as the second of a three-part series from The Detroit News, each installment taking a closer look at a position group in the Red Wings organization. The Aug. 18 piece covered our goaltenders, and now the spotlight swings to the defense — the group Seider anchors. We won't pretend last season ended the way we wanted, as a pair of losses pretty much knocked the Red Wings out of the playoff picture down the stretch. But a cornerstone defenseman playing at an elite level is exactly the kind of foundation a franchise builds a return on.
