Thorbjornsen Cruises to First PGA Tour Title in Detroit With Closing 63

What a Sunday we got in the Motor City! Michael Thorbjornsen started the final round three shots back of leader Davis Riley, and by the time the clouds cleared and the wind picked up, the 24-year-old Stanford man had flipped the script — a bogey-free 7-under 63, the lowest final round by a first-time winner on Tour this season. He surged into the lead at No. 14 with the third of four birdies in a six-hole stretch, chipped in from 35 feet at 12, and buried a 26-foot putt on his last hole to reach 18 under and win by two. Xander Schauffele shot 65 for second; Riley faded to third after four bogeys. Thorbjornsen came in ranked No. 69 in the FedEx Cup standings, and with the top 70 advancing after the Wyndham, this one mattered. The bittersweet part: this was the eighth and final Rocket Classic, drawing its strongest field and biggest crowds. But tournament director Mark Hollis says there have been conversations about bringing a tournament back to Michigan. We'll be watching.
