Gophers Outlast Our Wolverines 20-14, Reclaim the Jug After 49 Years

Down in Minneapolis the Golden Gophers outlasted Michigan 20-14, and for the first time since 2014 Minnesota got the better of the Wolverines — then hoisted that Little Brown Jug in front of their home crowd for the first time in 49 years. We had won 35 of our past 38 in this 134-year-old series. Not this Saturday. The Wolverines led 14-7 with 2:48 left before halftime and had every reason to feel good. Then it came apart: Nathaniel Staehling, a Minnesota native and North Dakota State transfer, took an interception 79 yards to the house, and our offense managed just 24 plays for 82 yards in the second half. Bryce Underwood went 10-for-21 for 101 yards, was sacked three times, and his fourth-and-5 heave from midfield with 37 seconds left sailed out of bounds. Now Michigan sits at 3-2, 0-2 in the Big Ten, and have failed to reach 20 points in four of five games under Kyle Whittingham. He says he'll sit down with the offense and coordinator Jason Beck during the bye week. Good. It needs to happen.
