MI Sports Chat - What a Weekend of Sports!

It was a weekend filled with heartbreak, milestones, and unforgettable comebacks across Michigan sports. From a pair of tough losses on the college football field to an emotional farewell at Comerica Park and a remarkable Presidents Cup comeback, there was no shortage of drama. Here's a look back at the weekend that was: College Michigan Football Michigan suffered a heartbreaking 20-19 loss to Iowa, with the Hawkeyes winning on a last-second pass into the corner of the end zone. The Wolverines fall to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play. Despite statistically outgaining Iowa, Michigan was hurt by too many unusual mental mistakes and costly penalties throughout the afternoon. It's a tough way to begin conference play, but there's little time to dwell on it. Michigan heads to Minnesota Saturday for a noon kickoff on FOX. Michigan State Football Nebraska came into Spartan Stadium and handed Michigan State a 31-13 defeat. It was a tough result for an MSU team that has shown signs of improvement, but the Spartans will have another opportunity to respond this weekend. Michigan State travels to Wisconsin for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday. Professional Detroit Tigers What a way to close the book on an incredible career. Future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander took the mound Saturday at Comerica Park for what was expected to be the final start of his remarkable career. Coming off an injury-riddled final season, Verlander battled through 5⅓ innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates before receiving a memorable sendoff from the Detroit faithful. And fittingly, the Tigers delivered a victory — a 4-3 win — making the afternoon at Comerica an even more special tribute to one of the finest pitchers and most accomplished Tigers in franchise history. A career like Verlander's deserved a moment like this. Presidents Cup What happened Sunday at Medinah Country Club in Chicago was something special. Team USA entered the final day trailing the International Team 10½-7½, but then came an astonishing comeback in the Singles matches. The Americans rallied to win the Presidents Cup, 17-13, turning a four-point deficit into a four-point victory. The Singles play Sunday afternoon provided the drama, and by the end, it was time to let the celebrations begin at Medinah. A remarkable comeback to cap an unforgettable weekend of sports.
